Major: English (Creative Writing)

Describe your research in just two sentences that we can all understand. I am writing a series of poems based on music I have written, as well as writing music to accompany poems I have previously written. My project will explore the relationship between poetry and music in performance where I play guitar and read poetry simultaneously.

Q: What surprised you about doing research?

A: I was surprised by the different ways I had to look at my work. Having to consider two separate creative processes at the same time changed them both considerably. It has allowed my work to take paths I would not have previously considered.

Q: What do you like most about your research project or process?

A: It gives me a creative outlet to put myself into. I have had poetry and music to help me process myself and the world around me since I was in middle school and it is something that has helped me to grow and develop as a writer and a thinker.

Q: What advice would you give to a friend wanting to get involved in research?

A: Be sure to have an idea of what you want out of the project. Have a clear end product in mind, where would you like your research to go? Where would you like it to be applied? How would you like it to be applied so that it can help and inform others? Also keep in mind what the project means to you and why it matters that you are a part of the research.

Q: How do you spend your time when you’re not working on your research project?

A: I try to remain active, always moving or creating something, whether it is out on a bike ride or drawing. I try to be productive. I also like to read, write in other genres, and play video games and instruments besides the guitar.
